Postural Dysfunction Summary & Self-Evaluation
We will use this guide to spot common posture problems and figure out which of the three main types of dysfunction your posture may fit into. Poor posture can lead to pain, limited movement, and lower performance. This evaluation will help us find patterns and start making improvements.
Postural Dysfunction Categories:
Pelvic Tilt / Hip Dysfunction
Signs: Hips tilt forward (swayback) or backward (flat back), exaggerated or reduced lumbar curve.
Pain Areas: Low back, hips, hamstrings.
Shoulder / Posture Dysfunction
Signs: Rounded shoulders, forward head posture, excessive upper back curve (kyphosis).
Pain Areas: Neck, upper back, shoulders.
Rotational / Hip Shift Dysfunction
Signs: One hip or shoulder higher, feet turned unevenly, body twists during walking.
Pain Areas: Knees, hips, lower back, ankles.
Basic Self-Evaluation Instructions:
1. Take clear photos standing naturally from the front, side, and back.
2. Look for alignment issues: Is one shoulder or hip higher? Do the feet turn out unevenly? Is your head forward of your shoulders?
3. Check from the side: Is there a large arch in your low back or a flat back? Are your shoulders rounded?
4. Walk barefoot: Do your hips twist? Are your arms swinging evenly? Do your feet roll inward or outward?
5. Based on these signs, refer to the descriptions above to determine your primary postural pattern.
